In Memoriam: Pete Harris

Many in the pediatric electrophysiology community may have never heard of Pete Harris.

J. Peter Harris MD was a pediatric cardiologist for nearly 5 decades at the University of Rochester School of Medicine. He wasn’t the one youʻll recall seeing as an invited podium speaker at NASPE or HRS or PACES events, but behind the scenes he had a profound effect on guiding several of us to become pediatric electrophysiologists.

Pete was the consummate educator and mentor at Rochester and East Carolina. He was selfless in his efforts to advance careers. He was our steadfast friend and advisor over decades. He constantly worked toward understanding the impact of new knowledge on the practical aspects of pediatric cardiology and had a deep love and command of pediatric arrhythmia care from its growth years in the 1980’s. He became part of the longstanding trio of pediatric cardiologists at Strong Memorial in Rochester for 40+ years: James Manning MD and Chloe Alexson MD were the other two of the trio. All were brilliant clinical pediatric cardiologists who provided outstanding care, worked (unreasonably) long hours and quietly pushed the boundaries of management based on solid cardiovascular principles. These were honest and rightly motivated people, and they challenged us to emulate those traits.

Pete had a habit of saying, “Half the joy of knowing something is sharing it with someone else”. Hereʻs to hoping we all strive, over the course of our academic careers, to come close to what Pete
gave us.
